Preterite vs. imperfect is consistently ranked among the hardest parts of Spanish for English speakers, because English has one simple past (“I walked”) and Spanish has two. Maria teaches the one mental model that makes the choice obvious: the imperfect is the scene — the background, the weather, what was already going on (era de noche, llovía, cuando era niña vivía en Madrid) — and the preterite is the event that drops into it (sonó el teléfono, fui al mercado, de repente todo cambió).
